R10m loss due to cable theft

HALFWAY HOUSE - The theft of copper cables has cost City Power R10 million so far.

Spokesperson for the power utility, Sydney Mphahlele, said one of the hotspots for cable theft was Halfway House and surrounds in Midrand.

Mphahlele said, “[We have] already lost about R10 million in direct costs this financial year ending in June as a result of cable theft incidents.”

A concerned resident notified City Power on 9 June at around 5am of cables lying on the ground on Janadel Avenue in Halfway House. The resident claimed that there were three cables, each 24m by 300mm.

“City Power Risk and Security team were [already] patrolling Halfway House and when [they came across the discovery], they inspected the cables and identified them as City Power cables.”

Mphahlele said they believed they were left on the street as a result of attempted cable theft.

“The incident was not reported to the police as the cables were recovered,” he said.

Residents are urged to make suspicious-looking cables and activity known to City Power through the utility’s hotline.
