Resident’s electricity incorrectly disconnected, City Power investigates

NOORDWYK - NOORDWYK resident Nomvula Nhlabati is upset that City Power incorrectly disconnected her electricity supply on 15 May, leaving her in the dark for six days.

Nhlabati said that her account, which only had R1 100 owing, was allegedly incorrectly disconnected instead of a house City Power intended to disconnect on the same street owing R39 000. Midrand Reporter is in possession of documents showing electricity statements for both homes.

Nhlabati added, “When power was cut at 1pm a week ago, I thought it was load shedding, only to realise as it got dark that I was the only one without power.”

She said she became depressed when she learned that she had been disconnected and had to book her family into a Protea Hotel for the weekend. She had to go home two days later, though, as she could not afford staying the cost.

She went to the Credit Control Centre in Midrand to find out why she was disconnected and paid the outstanding R1 100 to make sure they reconnected her without excuses. She, however, was not given a reason for the disconnection nor an assurance of instant reconnection.

Nhlabathi’s electricity was finally reconnected on 21 May, but she said it was a little late.

“All the food that was in my fridge has gone bad and I had to ask friends to allow me to cook in their homes and charge phones.”

City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele said they have been made aware of the issue.

“City Power is investigating all aspects relating to the meters on the two houses. We have now reconnected the customer,” he said.
