Carlswald ATM robbery suspects apprehended, allegations made against police

CARLSWALD - MIDRAND police arrested two of the three suspects who robbed a complainant of R11 000 while using an ATM at Carlswald Lifestyle Shopping Centre on 20 May.

“The incident took place around 6pm and the complainant alleged that while using the ATM, one of the suspects grabbed the complainant’s bank card, overpowered him and robbed him of the money,” said Midrand police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela. She said the suspects were driving a silver Opel Corsa.

Two suspects were apprehended by security guards, but one managed to escape.

Midrand Reporter found out about the incident from residents, who did not want to be named, claiming that police were called to the crime scene by security guards who handcuffed the suspects, but police did not arrive immediately.

Midrand Police Station Commander Colonel Steven Moodley, however, denied that police were contacted.

He explained, “This is all speculation that is going around and it is not true. Police did not receive a call. I found out about the incident from a WhatsApp group and immediately sent Captain Mashiane to the crime scene.”

Moodley added that there was more speculation on the same WhatsApp group that police released the suspects from custody which, again, he said is incorrect. The two suspects appeared at Midrand Magistrates’ Court on 21 May on a charge of robbery. Police are still looking for the third suspect.
