Pupil arrested after stabbing schoolmate to death with a pair of scissors

MIDRAND - A pupil from a Midrand school was arrested by Ivory Park police on 4 May, after he allegedly stabbed and killed another 18-year-old fellow pupil with a pair of scissors.

It was reported a memorial service was held for the deceased pupil at the school on 6 May.

Updates to follow as more information becomes available.

4 May, 5.38pm:

The 19-year-old suspect and the deceased were both in Grade 12.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said, “Police received a complaint from the school principal and on arrival they found the paramedics already at the scene who declared the victim dead.”

It is alleged that the two had an argument and the suspect took out a pair of scissors which he was using to cut out pictures and stabbed the victim once in the middle of his body.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane told Midrand Reporter that the department is aware of the incident. She said, “The department was alerted of the incident by the principal this morning and has met with the school, victim and suspect’s families over this tragic incident. The school’s governing body will meet with the parents tonight.”

Sekhonyane added that school staff immediately called police and an ambulance after the incident, but the victim sadly lost his life. The department said it will closely monitor the incident.

The suspect will appear at the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of murder.
