Life4U cleans up Ivory Park

IVORY PARK - Community organisation Life4U got down and dirty on 16 April and organised a toilet hygiene awareness campaign at Ivory Park Ext. 7.

Their campaign started at Rebonwe Primary School, where they cleaned the school’s toilets and educated pupils about toilet hygiene. From the school, they visited households which are close to the school and taught community members about hygiene.

Mpho Mofokeng, chairwoman of the organisation said, “We cleaned 20 households’ toilets in that community, and community members were very grateful for the campaign.”

Mofokeng said they encountered a lot of challenges during the door-to-door visits, “Broken toilets seats and a [dysfunctional] flushing system are just some of the problems”.

Mofokeng said it quickly became clear that toilet cleaning was not an everyday priority for some community members. “[However], we applaud the residents that have kept their toilets clean and hygienic.”

The organisation consists of young volunteers that have a desire to see hygiene become a priority in Ivory Park. “Our organisation appreciates the volunteers who were with us,” said Mofokeng.

She commended their commitment to the project and said they were making a big difference in their neighbourhoods.

“These young people choose to volunteer rather than commit crime, smoke nyaope and be a burden on [the State].”

“That’s why we always call for community members and local businesses to sow a seed of kindness into this project so that unemployed young people can continue to volunteer and build their communities.”
