Thief caught hiding in bush

MIDRAND - A thief was arrested after he was found hiding in bushes on Allan Road next to a local airport.

It is alleged the suspect robbed a man who was on his way to work at knifepoint on 23 March. The victim said he was approached by three men, one of whom had a knife. They demanded his cellphone, a Blackberry Curve 8520, which he handed over to them.

They then demanded cash. He told them he did not carry cash. The victim alleged that he overheard one of the robbers telling the armed robber to stab him. He said that when he heard that, he ran away and came across someone who called the police for him.

Constable Matome Tlamela of Midrand police said, ”The police quickly responded to the complaint as there was a vehicle nearby.”

She said when officers arrived on the scene, the location of the crime was pointed out to them. On arrival there they found the suspects hiding in some bushes. The three suspects started running away.

”The police chased the suspects and managed to arrest one. The other two suspects unfortunately got away,” said Tlamela.

The victim’s cellphone was found on the 33-year-old suspect.

The victim told police that he felt safer not carrying cash when he was walking to work.

“We are busy with investigations and are hoping to bring the other two suspects to book,” said Tlamela.
