Pupils learn about corrosion

GLEN AUSTIN - Christ Church College pupils attended an informative session on metal corrosion at the Corrosion Institute of Southern Africa in Glen Austin.

The institute invited pupils to learn about metal corrosion before the start of National Corrosion Awareness week on 24 April.

A member of the institute, Kevin Richardson engaged pupils in a talk and said, “Corrosion costs South Africa four percent of the GDP annually, and the institute seeks to reduce and prevent corrosion. We believe that costs of corrosion can be minimised by good design and appropriate use of protection methods in metallic and non-metallic construction materials.”

Richardson explained that preventing corrosion included choosing the right metal for the environment and understanding its pros and cons.

A metallurgy student from the University of Johannesburg, Lungile Harya also spoke to pupils about the causes of corrosion.

Pupil Paballo Mofokeng said, “I am glad I attended the learning workshop. I understand corrosion better.”

The institute is offering a free seat on its Not-Just-Rust course. To win, email the answer of the question: What day is National Corrosion Day? to members@corrisa.org.za
