R28 million for Casual Day

MIDRAND - "Would you like a sticker?" Turns out that this is a million rand question.

Casual Day, a project of National Council of Persons with Physical Disabilities South Africa, has raked in a whopping R28 million, to be shared among their national beneficiaries.

The announcement was made at the Gauteng Show and Tell showcase held at Gallagher Convention Centre on 6 March.

The host for the event, legendary radio personality David O’ Sullivan, held the room’s attention as he announced the significant increase in the money raised from 2013. In that year, Casual Day raised a milestone of R24.8 million. They bettered it by R3.2 this year.

R17 million was raised by the non-government organisation sector, while the remaining R11 million was raised through their partners in the corporate sector.

The beneficiaries of the funds, collected via a donation for a R10 sticker on the first Friday in September each year, include schools and organisations that render services to persons with disabilities. South African Disability Alliance, National Institute for the Deaf and Autism South Africa, to name a few.

Lusani Netshitomboni, the newly-elected chairman for the fundraising drive, said, “The issue with this project is that it keeps on growing. Our responsibility is to manage its growth and bring in sponsors without losing the core message of Casual Day.”

“It is an exciting project to work in as it allows us to make a change in people’s lives,” he said. “People often use the excuse of lack of resources. It doesn’t matter how small your contribution is, it makes a huge difference towards the success of this project.”

Indeed, those 10 Rands at the till have accumulated to a success story for Casual Day.
