Sector 3 elects committee, adopts new areas

MIDRAND - Sector 3 new committee members were elected at Midrand Primary School in a low-turnout meeting on 21 February at the sector's annual general meeting.

Midrand police station commander welcomed the new committee members and thanked the outgoing committee. He said, “As we welcome the new committee, we want to make residents aware that areas like Country View, Summit View and Savannah Hills, to name a few, are now under Midrand police. They were previously serviced by Olievenhoutbosch Police Station.”

Moodley added that while police are ‘adopting’ places like Country View, which have a high crime rate, police resources are still limited. “Midrand police are committed to fighting crime. We will work with the resources we have at present and hope to get more vehicles in the next financial year.”

Department of Community Safety representative James Khumalo said the election of the new committee is done after every five years. He added, “We are grateful to have ward councillors present to witness this election. The sector forum is there to ensure that there is a working partnership between the community and South African police.”

On Thursdays, Sector 3 has the most reported number of cases. Hotspot areas include Lever Road, Garden Road, 14th Road and Olifantsfontein Road. The sector reported that Sector 3 is the most problematic. Cases of violent crimes, drugs and attempted murders mostly take place in areas under that sector, especially Noordwyk.

Councillor Annette Deppe and councillor Candice James for Wards 93 and 112 respectively attended the Sector 3 meeting. They said, “We have concerns about the constitution not being signed yet, but the meeting went well.”

James added, “I hope to see a better representation of sector 3 residents in the next meetings, a few people attended.”

Residents were concerned about the levels of crime in the sector. Midrand police said crime statistics can be made available through sector meetings and via Midrand Reporter’s crime news.

Due to a low turnout, some people will be co-opted in the new committee at a later stage. The chairpersons, secretary and committee members were chosen on the day.
