Sector 2 elects new committee

MIDRAND - An AGM for Sector 2 Crime Forum was held at Midrand Police Station Hall to elect a new committee.

The sector includes Vorna Valley, Kyalami and Halfway Gardens. Midrand station commander Colonel Steven Moodley thanked the outgoing committee and encouraged the new committee members to continue fighting crime. He said, “We ask that you stay committed and attend meetings so that you can truly represent and help escalate the concerns of the community.”

According to the sector’s report, Fridays was when the most crimes were committed, especially when people were going to and coming from work. There have been 136 cases reported of theft out of motor vehicles, mostly in shopping centres between August last year and January this year.

A representative of the Department of Community Safety, James Khumalo urged the new committee to be committed to their work. “The community has elected you so that you better represent them,” he said.

Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe and Ward 112 councillor Candice James had concerns about the 2010 constitution of the Gauteng provincial police board that was referred to when electing the new committee. Deppe said, “We are proposing that the constitution is not legal and binding, it has not been signed into law yet. The report also did not touch on what the previous committee had done.”

James said she was impressed with the turnout at the meeting. “Sector 1, 2 and 4 had a good turnout,” she said. “I want to thank the police, especially Colonel Moodley and James Khumalo for acknowledging the role councillors play and including us in this process.”

The new committee members are:

  • Chairperson – Sandile Mahlaba
  • Deputy chairperson – Sharma Sewjalal
  • Secretary- Marianne Nel
  • Deputy secretary – Candice Fuller
