Revisiting motor history at Kyalami

JOBURG - The first round of the 2015 Midas Historic Tour presented by Gumtree takes place on 7 March at the world-renowned Kyalami Race Track.

“With more than 200 entries of race cars from the ’60s and ’70s being driven to their max by some of SA’s most accomplished drivers, a day of great action is on the cards,” said Shelley-Anne Taylor of the Sports Car Club which will be hosting the event. “Drivers include the likes of Peter Lindenberg, Jeffrey Kruger, Jannie van Rooyen, the Du Toit brothers and many more.”

She added that more than 60 cars would line up for the Pre ‘79 Marlboro Crane Hire Saloon Car race, and some 40 cars for the Sabat Lotus challenge. “These are the biggest fields in local motorsport currently and always produce close, thrilling racing.”

For single-seater fans there will be the Investchem Historic Formula Fords, and a close race is expected from the SKF Pre 66 Saloon Cars and Little Giants, while the Pre 84 Sports Cars always deliver.

The final event of the day will be the Liqui-Moly 1 Hour Endurance race, the first of a six-race series where the endurance of both car and driver is tested.

“There will be lots of excitement on the day with all the category champions wanting to start the year off defending their titles with a win,” added Taylor. “And the runners up wanting to prove they can beat them.”

Refreshments are available so there is no need to stay at home. Stalls selling various items from caps, jackets and shirts to books and models cars will also be on site.

Racing starts at 10am. There is no limit to pit access, so everyone can get up close with the cars, competitors and action, and enjoy history in motion.
