Mayibuye pupils can survive HIV

MIDRAND - The pupils of Maphuta Secondary School were treated to a lesson with a difference on 26 February.

The school in Mayibuye was visited by two Democratic Alliance members, Phindo Sibisi and Lebogang Motsumi, under the campaign, ‘I am Greater than HIV’.

Motsumi is also an Aids activist. She said the message is an important one to spread as she is living with HIV and would like to impart knowledge of how the pupils can overcome the virus.

“Every 30 minutes, a young person gets infected with HIV, hence it is important to have these kinds of talks at a grass roots level,” she said. “It is important to know that this virus does not affect your future, whether you are infected or affected.”

“If you are not affected or infected, the message still applies to you. You can be greater by not putting yourself in a situation where you can be infected.”

This is the message, Zukho Lukhele, a Grade 10 pupil received loud and clear. She said she learned not to run after boys. “The talk was about concentrating on our studies, it was also about knowing what HIV and Aids are,” said the class representative.

The school’s life orientation head of department, Ellen Thulari, said it was an inspirational talk from the young ladies to share with their pupils. “The talk was also about preventing HIV and teenage pregnancy.”
