Taxi association gives back to Ivory Park community

IVORY PARK - To be inspired, motivated and to think smart were the words drilled into pupils by various speakers at the Ivory Park Taxi Association (IPTA) function, which sets out to honour top Grade 12 pupils.

The event was held at Rabie Ridge community hall on 21 February.

Among those who attended the function was Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, councillors, principals, teachers, parents and surrounding business people.

The association sponsored 10 laptops that were given to the top 10 pupils from 10 high schools in Ivory Park.

“Our association is proud to announce the top pupils who have performed exceptionally well in their matric results last year,” said IPTA chairman, Joseph Mkhonza.

“These awards will serve as motivation while encouraging [others] to work harder,” said Mkhonza, when presenting laptops and trophies to the deserving pupils.

Motshekga commended the leadership of Ivory Park Taxi Association and the role it played in the community especially in matters relating to education.

“It is also so encouraging to see the principals from this area showing support in shaping our children’s future,” said the minister.

Association secretary Sam Sibisi said they had been doing motivational talks for the past four years in Ivory Park. However, they only decided to give laptops and invite the minister as they saw a need to give back more tangible gifts to their community.

“We approached the schools and they invited the minister to witness the whole thing,” he said. “This is just our way of giving back to our community.”

The award for best school went to Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School. The school obtained 91 percent matric pass rate last year to become the overall winner.
