Joburg currently in a heatwave: take precaution

JOBURG - Joburgers have been experiencing scorching hot temperatures since 7 February.

Reaching an almost high of 35 degrees Celsius in some parts of the province, it is safe to say that summer is in full swing.

According to the South African Weather Service’s website, the heatwave will still continue later in the week. The service ensured the increase in temperatures are being experienced throughout the country.

Gauteng is one of the provinces that has been hit hard by the heatwave; the dry highveld conditions may prove to be uncomfortable and a health risk for many.

The service advised that all residents should stay hydrated and drink lots of water, use sun protection at all times to avoid sun stroke and dehydration. They said community members should ensure all pets have adequate drinking water during this time. They also recommended that people should wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-coloured clothing and avoid dark colours because they absorb the sun’s rays.

They advised people to slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day and postpone outdoor games and activities.

The service advised residents to take special precaution with regards to children and the elderly during this time.
