Authorities talk road safety at taxi rank

MIDRAND - The Gauteng Department of Community Safety, in partnership with the Midrand police, embarked on a road safety campaign to educate taxi drivers on road safety.

On 16 January, the two entities set out to educate the taxi industry about safety due to the fact that public transport accounts for a high number of crashes and fatalities on the Gauteng roads.

The campaign was tailor–made to educate taxi drivers and passengers on the importance of adhering to road safety regulations.

During the campaign, drivers and commuters at the Midrand taxi rank were educated on dangers of excessive speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Driving of non-roadworthy vehicles, and reckless and negligent driving was discouraged. Drivers were taught the disadvantages of driving such vehicles and not adhering to the rules of the road,” said Constable Nanti Belebesi, social crime prevention co-ordinator of the Midrand police.

Commuters were taught on safe road usage, jay walking, drinking and walking and dangers of crossing the road when is it is unsafe to do so.

Belebesi, pleaded with drivers to report criminal activities in and around the taxi rank. “Let us all be responsible citizens by taking charge of our own safety and making sure that ranks do not become crime hubs.”

“Let’s work together with police to ensure that our place of work becomes crime free.”
