Matriculants are over the moon

MIDRAND - Midrand High School was one of many high schools abuzz with activity on the morning of 6 January.

Matric results were going to be released promptly at 9am and their 2014 matriculants were not willing to wait a second longer to receive them. The school proudly displayed their 98.6 percent pass rate and 60 percent Bachelor degree pass at the entrance of the school.

The class’ top achieving student received seven distinctions which included mathematics and physical science. Dudu Seodi was flanked by her family as she arrived at the school shortly after the gates opened.

“I already knew the results as I saw the paper this morning,” she said when asked of her achievement.

“I’m very happy and proud of myself.”

Seodi’s father, Sello Tiro, said he witnessed his daughter’s studying habits. “This is just testament that hard work does indeed pay. She is a hard worker,” he said.

His daughter agrees with him, “I was so surprised to see that I got a distinction in English, I normally get around 60 percent. I’ve been working really hard.”

Seodi plans on studying electrical and computer engineering at the University of Cape Town this year.

“I already applied and got a conditional acceptance. [I now know that I am definitely in.]”

Bongiwe Kawanga, is also one of the bright stars of the school with five distinctions. “My parents already knew that I was going to do well, they were excited for me though,” she said

She also advised future matriculants to take their preliminary examinations seriously. “They helped me to work harder and study better.”

Shaun Seleke, who achieved three distinctions in physics, mathematics and accounting said, “I’m excited to have qualified to study actuarial sciences at the University of Pretoria.”

His advice to up-and-coming matrics is simple: “Don’t sleep. If you feel you haven’t studied enough, get up and study.”
