Christmas in childcare

JOBURG - The holidays are an opportunity for many families to spend time together – but for vulnerable children and their caregivers, the festive season can be a challenge.

Childcare centres seek to provide a place of stability for at-risk children, whether through family counselling, after-school support, or residential care. While Johannesburg closes down for the summer holiday, employees take leave, and other families celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or simply make the most of their time off, homes must continue to care for their charges – and the charitable public may be able to provide some festive cheer.

At Arcadia child and youth care centre, rooted in the Jewish community of Sandringham, maintenance of family structure is at the heart of child care, and several of the home’s 17 children will spend the holidays with parents or family. For many children, however, family dynamics are simply too volatile, and it is up to Arcadia to provide holiday excitement in the form of camps – with children attending Bnai Akiva, Camp Kesher or Betar – and fun activities for those staying in Johannesburg.

At Impilo Child Protection and Adoption Services, meanwhile, being sent away for any length of time is considered too disruptive for the centre’s 12 babies, and around-the-clock care must be provided throughout the holiday period. However, established volunteers are encouraged to take children out for a family Christmas or a day’s activities, and gifts for both children and their tireless caregivers are much appreciated.

Established in 1902, Abraham Kriel Childcare protects over 1 000 vulnerable children through a widespread network of satellite homes, many of which will close temporarily as children and staff leave for the holidays. While contributions in the form of food or clothing, and sponsored outings or treats (rather than parties, which over-excite and often disappoint) are appreciated, Abraham Kriel is desperately in need of a financial Christmas miracle. In the wake of a significant budget shortfall, the organisation asks that community members make a donation towards the continuation of its work.

Family vacations may put a strain on your pocket, but this festive season, spare a thought for the vulnerable children of Johannesburg, and find a childcare centre that needs your holiday spirit.
