Suspects who robbed police escape from court

TEMBISA - Provincial police spokesperson Captain Noxolo Kwesa said Gauteng police are searching for two of the four suspects, who were arrested in connection with the hijacking of two police officers in Rabie Ridge in November, after they escape from Tembisa court on 10 December.

Kwesa said the two suspects, Bafana Ngwenya (34) and Khulani Zungu (29), escaped after they appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court for a formal bail application.

She said the suspects were arrested for car-jacking and for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm after they locked two police officers inside a police van in Rabie Ridge in November.

She said both of the accused appeared before court on 10 December and were remanded to appear before the court again on 14 January next year for a formal bail application.

Kwesa said, “After the court proceedings had finished, the suspects were held in the holding area between Court 7 and Court 8.

She said a roll-call was conducted at around 4pm before the suspects were transported to Modderbee Prison. She said the two suspects did not respond and police started searching for them. It was established that the two accused had forced open the steel mesh of Court 8 cell and escaped. She said it is suspected that they escaped between 2pm and 3pm.

“Police have since opened a case of aiding and abetting prisoners to escape,” said Kwesa.

She added Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General L Mothiba said no stone would be left unturned in establishing what led to the escape.

Mothiba said, “If there are any indications of negligence on the side of our members, they will be charged. We invested time and effort in arresting these very dangerous criminals and now they are in the streets. I assure the public that we will do everything to ensure that we find them and add a charge of escaping from lawful custody.”

Kwesa said police urged members of the community not to confront these suspects as they are dangerous but rather call the police.
