Christmas goodies at the market

MIDRAND - The Groenvoer Christmas country market took off with a great start as visitors came to sample food, gardening and animal stalls.

Charity stalls included Animals in Distress, Midrand SPCA, and Kashgar Kennels and Friends. Jennifer Sarkis from Groenvoer market said, “We are thrilled with the number of people who came to see what the market has to offer.”

Cathy Khoury-Prinsloo showed Midrand Reporter a Keyhole Garden. She explained that the garden saves water and its base is made from poles, elevating the garden from the ground. The water is poured in the centre of the garden then makes its way out to the crops and plants.

Some of the stalls at the market included a dance company, Dance-4-Fun, which entertained guests with great dances. Halfway House Scouts built a frame tower made of ropes and gum poles. Don Norris said, “The tower shows great skill that scouts have, a flag pole can be put on top of the frame or it can be used as a watch tower.”

Kashgar Kennels showcased Afghan hounds which are known for their grace and beauty. Candice Kelly had barn owl and spot eagle boxes on display. She said, “I am involved in a project that distributes boxes for barn owls in townships as a rodent control measure.”

A market visitor Siphesihle Nyati said she enjoys coming to the market whenever she can. She said, “I love that you can find interesting things here and at reasonable prices. It is a nice way to spend the weekend.”
