Glen Austin High School gives to the less fortunate

GLEN AUSTIN - Glen Austin High School has a set of values that include doing well and being good towards fellow mankind. This is according to the school’s principal, Alec Abbott.

He said the school’s response to the Acts of Love organisation’s needs was only natural as they try to teach compassion to their pupils. “Our children are very fortunate as they come from affluent families. We want them to know that not everyone is as fortunate as they are.”

The school’s sports co-ordinator, Loshnee Iyver, is also one of the foundation’s leaders. She said the organisation asked the school’s pupils to provide under-privileged youth with basic necessities in a small shoe box, that is filled with stationary, school clothes and toiletries that are worth R300.

The organisation helps destitute orphans and elderly citizens.

“Acts of Love has been doing this for the past five years; this is the first partnership with the school.”

“We are honoured to receive these four boxes, which were so kindly donated by the pupils and the board of the school,” said Iyver.

The pupils were spoken for by Themba Goniwe, who reiterated his principal’s words on charity. “It is important to give to charity. It shouldn’t even be referred to as charity. It should be referred to as love, this reminds the less fortunate that they are not forgotten,” he said.

Loshnee received the boxes on behalf of the organisation and said they would go a long way in helping the organisation, and they hoped to grow the partnership with the school to even greater heights.

She also said that she and the other leaders, Cindy Naidoo and Collin Naidoo, in the foundation, welcomed additional support from corporates. The gift boxes are only a part of what the organisation does, they run a mobile clinic and they have an edu-care programme for underprivileged children.
