World Aids Day celebrated

JOBURG - On World Aids Day on 1 December, organisations celebrated the advancement of medical treatment pertaining to the disease.

The Treatment Action Campaign (Tac) hosted an activist reunion in central Johannesburg. In November this year, Tac announced a campaign to raise R10 million internationally towards Aids research. This will be achieved by hosting marathons and by holding meetings with influential political leaders.

The day brought together 150 leaders from HIV affected communities including media personalities, law specialists, doctors and researchers.

Dr Aaron Motsolaedi was one of the many activists that was present at the gathering which saluted activists and campaigners who have helped raise awareness about the disease.

The day was used to highlight the birth of the anti-retroviral treatment programme in April 2004. The programme has saved 2.5 million lives thus far and has prevented countless infections.
