UPDATE: Paramedics spot Serval on highway

MIDRAND - Two paramedics spotted a cheetah cub on the R21 by Olifantsfontein Road in Irene between 3am and 4am on the morning of 1 December.

Reports from community members looking for the animal say it may be a serval and not a cheetah cub.

Tyran Blignaut and Samuel Neels said they were driving in the ambulance on the road when they spotted the animal sitting on the road in front of them and they slowed down. Blignaut said at first they thought it was a small dog but as they got closer they saw it was a cheetah cub.

Blignaut said as they approached it, the cub ran away from the road into a field in the residential area of Irene. He believed it was a young cub, aged between four- and eight-months-old.

He said they handed the information over to the animal control authorities and Kempton Park Community Police Forum in order to help catch the cub. He said the area was close to Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

Bryanston resident and founder of eblockwatch group Andre Snyman mobilised the group’s 20 000 Gauteng members to help find the cheetah. Snyman said eblockwatch group had forwarded the information to professionals in order to help catch the cheetah.

He warned community members that if the cheetah is seen, community members should contact him. “Please do not try to be a hero and catch it,” said Snyman.

Community members commented on the eblockwatch group Facebook page that they hoped the cheetah would be captured and not killed.
