Police campaign against abuse

MIDRAND - Ivory Park police are appealing to the community to stop violence against women and children.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said police will arrest anyone abusing women and children. Ivory Park police launched Operation Basadi, loosely translated Operation Women, as part of the 16 Days of Activism No Violence Against Women and Child Abuse campaign. Sekgobela said, “On 25 November, we traced domestic violence suspects around the community through the operation supported by female police officers in areas including Thembisa, Thembisa South, Olifantsfontein, Norkem Park, Kempton Park, Sebenza, Edenvale and Rabie Ridge.”

Sekgobela said during the operation, a man was arrested for physically abusing his girlfriend in Tswelopele. “The suspect found his girlfriend and his grown-up son sleeping together in the suspect’s room. He got angry and accused them of having an affair and assaulted her. The son ran away while the suspect, in anger, started breaking plates, a table and a TV in the room.”
