Metro police impound taxis

MIDRAND - Taxis were impounded on Kruger and Swart streets in Midrand. According to Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, the taxis were impounded at 7am on 24 November.

“Metro police impounded 18 taxis for reckless driving. All the taxi drivers had to pay a fine of R500 before they could get their taxis back.”

When asked if the R500 fine is effective as taxi drivers keep breaking the law and paying the fine, Minnaar said Metro police keep the taxis for most of the day, and taxi drivers make a loss on that day’s takings.

As the festive season nears, Minnaar said Metro police will continue to pull over people driving recklessly on the roads. “We will have a lot of road blocks during and towards the festive season. Metro police will do roadworthy checks, and check vehicle tyres,” Minnaar warned.

He stated that high speed units will be in place and anyone driving above the speed limit will definitely be arrested and anyone who drives drunk will not be tolerated.
