First monthly open day at the SPCA

MIDRAND - The Midrand SPCA in Glen Austin had their first of many open days recently.

The aim of the open day is to reduce their adoption fee. The fee which normally is R650, is only R500 on an open day.

On 22 November, which marked the first of the monthly event, 14 pets were adopted and one was taken home on the same day.

Brenda Lucas who is the chairwoman of the animal organisation said the day had been successful. “We aim to reduce the adoption fee and that’s why we are doing this.”

The fee Lucas is referring to includes sterilisation, immunisation and de-worming.

“Because our animals are sterilised before they are adopted, one cannot use them to breed. We are trying to discourage breeders from adopting them,” said Lucas. “They are meant to be pets, nothing else.”

Dylan Brander, a father of two children, was at the open day and adopted a cat for his daughters. “My family loves cats,” he said. The Centurion based, marketing man said he was hoping the cat would teach his two young daughters responsibility. “We are going to go home and choose a name for her and then they’ll have to look after her.”

The SPCA said there are still a number of other animals within the shelter that need a permanent home, and the public is invited to their next open day which will be announced soon.
