Whatsapp users have not even had the chance to recover from their “blue tick” troubles, and now the messaging app on everyone’s cellphones and tablets will be changing once more, but this is not to say that the latest of the changes is a bad thing.
Jan Koum, Whatsapp’s founder, was raised with a distrust for government and resentment for entities that eavesdrop into the personal lives of the public. It is for this reason that Koum has, for the past week, implemented end-to-end encryption for Whatsapp’s users. Techno-sites will explain that end-to-end encryption means that messages will only be decrypted once they reach the intended recipient, and what this means, in normal terms, is that this new implementation will not allow unintended recipients to be able to access messages.
The government and hackers will not be able to access your private chats on Whatsapp any longer and ordinary, non-tech-savvy users will not even know the difference. Most of the Whatsapp-using public would probably thank Jan for this new implementation, but could it result in adverse side effects? Could it begin to raise questions from the government regarding safety of the state and terrorism?
