Man receives a helping hand

MIDRAND - Lives are changed when companies invest in their staff.

Stanley Mangoegape, manager at the Midrand Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) depot, is testament to this. He received training from the company through their depot operator mentorship programme, which not only improved his professional life, but his health as well.

When Mangoegape met the Redisa team last year, he was very ill and had no medical aid to help him pay his rising medical bills. “Working with Redisa has changed my circumstances and given me a new lease on life. They gave me an opportunity when no one else would,” said Mangoegape.

As a depot manager, his core tasks include logistically managing the drop-off of collected waste tyres, and ensuring that waste tyres are sent to recyclers for processing.

“I have been undergoing on-the-job training, and learning more about managing the depot, business skills and financial planning. All these have been incredibly helpful,” said Mangoegape.

After just over a year, Redisa has made significant strides towards building a viable and sustainable waste management industry focusing on tyre recycling, they said. According to Stacey Davidson, Redisa director, “Through our initiative, we are creating jobs and enhancing skills for depot operators, transporters as well as processors.”

In terms of the depot operator mentorship initiative, “a suitable candidate is selected and mentored by a Redisa employee who has a number of years of experience working within the tyre industry. We are proud of the mentorship programme, and we are especially proud of Stanley who is a vital part of our team,” commented Davidson.

They said since 1 December last year to September this year, they have created 1 503 jobs and are supporting 83 entrepreneurial small and medium sized businesses.
