Six confirmed dead, seven injured in collision

TEMBISA - Six people, including a child, were killed and seven others were injured on Olifantsfontein Road in Tembisa after a taxi and Ford Ranger were involved in a head-on collision at around 5am on 21 November.

The accident occurred on the M57 at Olifantsfontein Road by Old Pretoria Road in Tembisa.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said, “Unfortunately it was extremely difficult for paramedics to identify the exact amount of bodies at the time. One of the injured occupants stated that there might have been eight people still in the taxi, however this could not be confirmed on scene.”

Vermaak said paramedics attending to the scene found the taxi on fire and on its roof. “Paramedics found seven people with several injuries a few meters away from the taxi. One of them was in a serious condition. It is believed that they managed to escape the burning taxi through the broken windows,” said Vermaak.

He said the blaze was extinguished by fire fighters and an emergency helicopter airlifted a woman with severe burn wounds and possible fractures for further medical attention. “The driver of the Ford Ranger sustained moderate injuries and was also transported to a local hospital,” said Vermaak.

Vermaak said the other patients also sustained burn wounds and possible fractures and were treated on scene.
