I woke up to a web link shared by a former paramedic colleague, we worked together… in emergency services. We were both unsurprised by the article published on 16 October in Midrand Reporter, [and] are happy that someone finally had the courage to expose to the public what a fraud the emergency branch we are under is, at taxpayers’ expense.

As the article stated, it is true that adequate equipment is not supplied for paramedics to do their work. We experience the distress of having someone die in our hands because we responded to a call, yet we do not have enough resources to help the patient – this is traumatic for us as well.

The Gauteng EMS district offices are a joke, they are known as satellite offices. One office in Sedibeng has no clean running water for the bathrooms. Paramedics collect water from offices nearby to flush the toilets. EMS is a health entity but it, in this case, has poor hygiene standards.

There is also poor office administration, overtime details are not captured properly; and paramedics are overworked and understaffed.

We want advocate Thuli Madonsela to investigate the conditions these paramedics are forced to work under. The Midrand Reporter article and public pressure should force EMS management to clean up their act.
