Help feed the animals of the Midrand SPCA

MIDRAND - The Midrand SPCA needs the community's help.

“Although food is always an ongoing need at the Midrand SPCA, during the festive season (from mid-November until February) our food supplies generally become low,” said chairperson Brenda Lucas. She attributed the problem to an influx of unwanted and stray animals that are received by the association at this time.

The kennels of the association often become full during this time and the Midrand SPCA usually ends up with 130 to 150 animals.

Feeding these animals can be a difficult task as the association uses about 1800kg of dog food and 300kg of cat food per month.

“September to February is also known as kitten season and we generally have an influx of kittens that require kitten food,” said Lucas.

Lucas warned pet owners against not sterilising their pets, as this contributes to the number of unwanted animals that land up at the association’s door. She also said, “People need to start making preparations with a boarding kennel as we approach the festive season, as these tend to fill up really quickly.”

Lucas said they were grateful for the food donations they’ve received thus far. “We thank the public and companies [that have donated] for their continued support as we rely on their donations for the purchase of food,” she said.
