Teacher’s work goes international

GLEN AUSTIN - A teacher at Glen Austin High School is an artist recognised at Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia and his art is displayed at the Museum of Africa in Washington D.C.

Berthold Moyo said he is an artist at heart who also enjoys teaching.

Midrand Reporter had a chance to look at Moyo’s work displayed in his classroom at the school where he teaches. Moyo paints acrylic and oil paintings. He said, “I have been painting for the past 20 years and I have been involved in developing young talent with an Alexandra based non-governmental organisation.”

Moyo is originally from Zimbabwe and has been in South Africa since 2006. He explained that for his art pupils at Glen Austin High School, art is not just a subject but preparation for those who want to have a career as artists. Moyo has been a teacher for the last 16 years.

“Art tells a story, my work tells an African story and its changing times and the people who influence me and others. I have done oil paintings of the late former President Nelson mandela, a great man.”

He revealed that later in the year his art pupils at the school will have a chance to showcase their work.

Asked what motto he lives by he said, “I believe in the saying that success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself, its what you do for others.”
