Be alert when using ATMs

RABIE RIDGE - Police spokesperson Constable Jacob Nhlongo said police were appealing to residents to be alert when using ATMs.

He said, “In the past month we have had two people who have been robbed while at the ATM. Be alert when using the ATMs, be careful of anyone who may be trying to distract you or trying to ask for help.”

He added that in both cases the complainants had been focused on withdrawing money and did not see that they were being surrounded by suspicious acting people.

Nhlongo said towards the end of the year these type of incidents increase. “People get caught up in money making schemes in the hopes of doubling their money for the Christmas holidays.”

He said people should avoid carrying large sums of money in their purses and wallets at the end of the month. “Also avoid using ATMs after dark, chances of being robbed are higher.”
