Unqualified teacher’s assistant angers parents

CARLSWALD - Parents of a pupil at Sagewood School said they are not happy with the school's decision to use an unqualified temporary teaching assistant.

The parents, who have asked to remain anonymous for fear that their child may bear the brunt of exposing the issue to Midrand Reporter, said, “It is concerning to learn that a lady who works at the school has become a temporary assistant teacher. The assistant does not have a teaching qualification, even though he or she holds a certificate for that subject.”

The parents pointed out that the school must speak to affected parents and pupils before making decisions that could affect the quality of learning.

The school has asked that the names and the details surrounding the incident not be made public.

Director of the school Johreen Patel said the school is addressing the issue. “With the history of the school’s good academic results the school has a track record of taking responsible decisions to safeguard the future of its pupils.”

“With this particular issue, the school has once again acted in the best interests of the pupils by providing suitably qualified supervision under unexpected and unforeseen circumstances. We have always had an open door policy with pupils and parents and invite them to use it to address such issues.”
