Heritage Day event at the Swiss Club

MIDRAND - Bulelwa Mokori had a vision of people learning and sharing their backgrounds with each other when she planned a Heritage Day event for 24 September.

She felt that the Midrand community was especially privileged to have so many different races living in one relatively small area. “We have people from different countries who have come to live here,” she said. “It would be nice for us to learn from one another so that we are not offended by each others traditions.” She organised the event through her company, Harvest Time Enterprises.

The Swiss Club in Vorna Valley played host and caterer for the event.

Ward 112 councillor Candice James had an interesting experience on the day. “They tried to get me to eat mopane worms,” she said. “But I drew the line there.”

However, she did admit to having a liking for morogo which is wild spinach. “I tried it and it was delicious,” said James.

The event was also graced by Billy Rudlin, chairman of the Midrand Community Policing Forum, who emphasised the importance of knowing your neighbour. “It is not just being a good neighbour, but also we are all safer that way,” he said.

Musician, Condry Ziqubu spoke of his roots stemming from Alexandra township in Gauteng.
