Suspect escapes from Midrand Police Station

MIDRAND - A drunk driving suspect escaped from the holding cells at Midrand Police Station on 28 September.

Midrand police communications officer, Constable Matome Tlamela, confirmed that the suspect escaped from the cells. This after a person, who wished to remain anonymous, had told Midrand Reporter about the incident.

The source alleged that the suspect escaped after doors were left unlocked and further alleged only one officer was on duty at the holding cells at the time of the incident. However, Midrand police would not comment on these details.

Tlamela said, “The suspect was re-arrested in Soweto and is back in Midrand police’s custody. Details surrounding the incident and how the suspect escaped are under investigation.”

Midrand police could not immediately comment on what would happen to the police officers who were on duty at the time, and if extra charges would be added to the suspect’s case, as the matter is still under investigation.
