Midrand faces another day with no water

MIDRAND - Midrand suburbs are still battling no water as the facilities that still have low water levels are South Hills tower, Rabie Ridge, President Park and Randjesfontein reservoirs.

Joburg Water’s spokesperson Millicent Kabwe said the suburbs supplied by the four storage facilities that were still low on water include, Ebony Park, Kaalfontein, Ivory Park, President Park, Glen Austin, Allendale, Country View, Rabie Ridge, Mayibuye, Risana, South Hills and Thulisa Park.

“We have made temporary provision for the areas that are still affected by way of water tanks. In the Midrand area, we have four roaming tanks and in South Hills we have a stationery tanks at the water tower and at 21 Risana Road,” said Kabwe.

She said Joburg Water were also giving special attention and priority to hospitals, clinics and schools until the situation improves.

She said most of the water reservoirs and towers were recovering at a good rate. “Only 2% of the residents of the city are still experiencing low water pressures and no water situation,”  said Kabwe.

She said Joburg Water were pleading with residents that do have water to use water sparingly during this period.

23 September, 2.30pm:

Midrand residents spent the night of 22 September without water supply and on the next morning some areas still had no water.

Johannesburg Water released a statement on 22 September addressing the issue. It stated that there were low water levels at Rabie Ridge, President Park and Randjesfontein reservoirs.

Therefore, suburbs supplied by the three storage facilities including Ebony Park, Kaalfontein, Ivory Park, President Park, Glen Austin, Allendale, Country View, Rabie Ridge and Mayiboye would experience water shortages.

To remedy the situation water tanks had been placed at the water tower and at 21 Risana road in South Hills. Six roaming tanks have also been made available for residents, with clinics, hospitals and schools taking priority.

Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water said, “This is due to Rand Water experiencing problems at their pump stations which resulted in Johannesburg Water not getting water pumped into its reservoirs at a normal rate.

“We are appealing to residents that do have water to use it sparingly. That means using water for basics activities around the home rather than watering the gardens and filling swimming pools,” she concluded.

Midrand Reporter gathered from social media that these areas were: Rabie Ridge, Glen Austin, President Park, Vorna Valley, Halfway Gardens, KyalamiHills, Midway Gardens, Allandale, Vorna Valley, Ivory Park Extension 2, Ebony Park, Tembisa and Erand.

Midrand Reporter’s BBM contact Eazy Gaompotse said in Rabie Ridge toilets were causing a stench and the residents were walking to Kanana to fill up buckets of water. Another BBM contact said some children in Ivory Park stayed home as there was no water to get ready for school

It is unclear as to when the affected areas will have water again.
