Business woman shares her views on Heritage Day

MIDRAND - Founder and managing director of Imbizo Shisanyama Midrand and 2013 Business Champion Award winner, Rita Zwane, said Heritage Day on 24 September, is a significant day in the South African calender.

“As a country with 11 official languages, our major commonality is our dynamic diversity. Young people should be encouraged to reflect and embrace Heritage Day.”

Zwane believes that the true meaning and significance of Heritage Day and other important public holidays is at serious risk of dilution if South Africans continue to prioritise or allow the commercialisation of this day and other important public holidays.”

She said her African-style themed restuarant has, without fail, for the last decade celebrated African Heritage.

“It would be tragic if due to the link of Heritage Day to Braai Day that we lose the real meaning and significance behind the public holiday.”

She emphasised that it remains our responsibility as citizens to ensure that commercialisation of holidays do not rob us of our historical heritage. She added that South Africa needs to be cautious of raising a generation that no longer understands or appreciates culture, heritage and traditions. Heritage Day must remain a day that reminds us of our identity as Africans as it is important to know where we come from, she said.
