Sabric welcomes crime statistics

MIDRAND - The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric), based in Midrand, on behalf of the banking and cash in transit (CIT) industries has welcomed the release of the annual crime statistics by Police Minister, Nathi Nhleko on 19 September.

The centre released a statement shortly after the minister, expressed concern that violent crime was on the increase, as exhibited by the statistics.Their own crime stats also indicated an increase in bank robberies, bank burglaries and CIT robberies. However, they have also have seen an 11 percent decrease in ATM attacks for the past year. The decrease indicates a positive impact on the fight against ATM attacks, said their statement. They claimed that the decrease was consistent with the previous year’s 17 percent decrease.

In order to fight the scourge posed by violent criminals Sabric, the banks and the CIT companies work closely with the police, said Sabric.

“We continue to review all working structures to appropriately address the threats posed by organised criminals,” said the centre’s CEO, Kalyani Pillay.

“It is only through such collaboration that we will ensure that the fight against organised crime is dealt with. We believe that fighting crime is a collective responsibility and not only that of law enforcement,” she said.

“We would also like to thank the police for continuously striving to collaborate with the banking and CIT industries to ensure that the criminals are brought to book and we look forward to more arrests and successful prosecutions,” said Pillay.
