Noordwyk Secondary School goes to prison

MIDRAND - Noordwyk Secondary School and the Midrand police took a Johannesburg prison tour.

The police were also represented by their Youth Desk. The initiative was aimed at raising awareness among pupils about prison life.

“Learners got to experience and learn about the harshness of life in prison. They now know that prison is not a good place to be in,” said Constable Matome Tlamela of the police.

According to Tlamela, the inmates couldn’t wait to share some of their wisdom with the pupils. “They told them that in prison, you don’t own anything as an individual. You only own the orange uniform that is handed to you as you enter.”

That sobering thought prompted a host of question from the teenagers. The inmates were asked to explain how they ended up in prison and the recurring answer was that the prisoners had mixed with the wrong crowd.

Tlamela said, “They told the pupils to be careful of the friends that they choose. They also advised them to listen to their parent and teachers.”
