SPCA prepares for summer

MIDRAND - As summer approaches, the Midrand SPCA is running an outreach programme in order to lessen the number of animals becoming susceptible to seasonal viruses.

Every Saturday, there will be a free dip and vaccination performed on pets whose owners care to bring them to the SPCA.

On 6 September children from around Midrand’s informal settlements, came to the society’s Glen Austin premises to have their furry friends dipped and vaccinated. The vaccinations are important as they prevent diseases in animals.

“We were impressed by the turn out. People came from all over Midrand’s townships,” said Elsje Naicker of the society.

Volunteers and staff were on hand to oversee the procedures and to provide medical attention when needed.

There was also an educational demonstration on how to care for animals and how to remove ticks as billiary fever, an illness affecting horses, dogs and cats is a big problem in rural communities. The illness can, however, be prevented with proper care by the owner.

Naicker expressed gratitude to the staff and volunteers who assisted children on the day and for helping to ensure that all animals got proper care.

“Should you wish to contribute towards the programme, items such as tick and flea powder, collars and leashes are always a need,” she said.
