Suspected car-jamming at Country View petrol station

MIDRAND - A Country View resident said her bag and phone were stolen while she was at Engen Garage on Lever Road.

Jennifer Joni said, “I parked my car right at the door, locked the car, went into the garage shop, and in less than five minutes I was back out. When I got back to my car I noticed that my bag and phone had been stolen.”

She asked the petrol attendants if they saw anyone opening her car and they said they did not see a thing.

“I asked if their outside cameras were on, they said they don’t have cameras which are operating outside; [but then] they changed their story saying the cameras are there… The following day I returned to the garage with a friend and asked to see the CCTV footage, the manager blatantly refused.

“A week later they showed me the footage, what took so long? What were they hiding?” she added.

Joni’s friend, who was also at the garage at the time of the incident, and asked to remain anonymous said, “I was surprised when I passed her car and saw the lights were on inside the car when she was still inside the shop.”

Engen Group communications manager for corporate affairs, Gavin Smith said, “Engen is aware of the alleged car-jamming incident involving a client’s vehicle at Country View Engen garage. A week after the incident the manager invited Joni to view CCTV footage, and she did.”

He stated that police were notified of the incident and it is being investigated.

“Regrettably, reports of car-jamming are on the increase across the country but we urge Engen customers to be vigilant wherever they park their vehicles.”

Midrand police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela confirmed that a case of theft-out-of-motor vehicle has been opened.
