Man offers dogs to feed lions

PRESIDENT PARK - Lory Park Zoo curator Matty Van Eck told Midrand Reporter that a man phoned and said he wanted to offer his dogs as meat for the lions and pythons.

She said, “He said he no longer wants the two dogs but the suggestion to kill and offer them to lions was shocking to us.”

Van Eck explained that the zoo gets meat to feed animals from vets when they have put down a horse or a cow. “We do not take pets. We realised though that the man had no bad intentions and just wanted to give the dogs away, he thought he was helping.”

She emphasised that anyone who wanted to donate food to the zoo could donate fruits, vegetables for the monkeys and sunflower seeds for the birds.

Van Eck spoke to an inspector at the SPCA, Theo Mokgatle, who offered to go and collect the dogs. Mokgatle confirmed that “the dogs are in good health and being looked after at the SPCA in Midrand”.
