What to do if you witness a crime

MIDRAND - Police said residents must pay particular attention to the features of the offender if they witnessed a crime.

Constable Matome Tlamela said, “When reporting a crime telephonically, remain on the phone until the communication officer is fully briefed with all the necessary information to dispatch the appropriate response personnel to the scene.”

Things to note about the offender are:

  •  Approximate age, race, height and weight.
  •  Hair colour and style, beard or moustache.
  •  Notable characteristics such as acne, scars, glasses and mental state.
  •  Clothing description.
  •  Location of where crime was witnessed and where offender was last seen.
  •  Last known direction of travel.
  •  Vehicle description and distinctive marking.

She assured that a witness who wished to remain anonymous may do so as “it is more important that a response be dispatched as quickly as possible”.
