Glen Austin girls Soccer excel

GLEN AUSTIN - The Glen Austin High School junior girls soccer team participated in their first soccer league this year where they advanced to the quarter-finals.

They played in the Johannesburg Central Soccer League competition.

The girls soccer team played six matches, and won three, lost two and drew one.

Sports co-ordinator of the school and coach of the girls team, Loshnee Iyer said, “One never knows what to expect from a young team that has only started playing soccer together two weeks prior to their first match. I’m extremely honoured to say that these juniors truly exceeded my expectations.

“The first match was the most nerve wrecking for me, playing against a well established college, the girls knew that they had to put in their all into that match to obtain a score we can be happy with.”

The team started the competition on a high note winning 2-1. The rest of the competition was set on that foundation and the girls went on to win three matches to reach the quarter-finals. The feat was a milestone for the young team.

Unfortunately, a loss in the quarter-finals meant a disappointing end to the season for the soccer team. However, there were individual stars recognised. Magda de Wet who played center back was named as the most outstanding player. The golden boot of the season was given to Bonolo Molope and player of the season was goalkeeper Palesa Ohimile. These players will receive certificates from the school for their outstanding play.
