R500 fine for parking outside station

MIDRAND - Motorist Hillary Hinkwa said he and other motorists who parked outside the Midrand Gautrain Station were issued fines by Metro police on 12 August.

Often many cars are parked on the side of Grand Central Boulevard instead of at the station.

“We have been parking in that undesignated parking space as it is an open space and there are no signs informing us that it is illegal to park there,” he said.

He said he was fined R500 and was referred to the Midrand Magistrates’ Court. “I spoke to an official at the court who said I should return after two weeks when the fine is in the system.”

Asked why he did not park in the Gautrain designated parking area he said, “It is costly, I can’t do that on a daily basis.”

According to the Gautrain’s call centre, parking is currently R18 for the first hour to 24 hours. After that the station charges R55 overnight parking.

Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said motorists who parked in the open space outside the station were doing so illegally. She stated, “It is illegal to park there, it is an open space but anyone can see it is not for parking.

“There is a parking at the station but motorists park outside to avoid paying for parking.”

Mamonyane pointed out that Metro police would issue tickets to anyone who continued to park outside the station. “When your car is stolen at that open space, we are the first people you will run to, to find your car. Please park inside the station’s parking. It has cameras too.”
