Art Week Joburg to launch

JOBURG - The first edition of Art Week Joburg, a new platform to showcase and reinforce the existing strengths of the city's art scene, will launch this month.

For the week leading up to the FNB Joburg Art Fair, Art Week Joburg will activate various creative hubs with a line-up of events including exhibitions, artist walkabouts, performances, public art walks, panel discussions, and graffiti tours.

Among the creative hubs to be activated are the Rosebank art strip, Maboneng Precinct, Arts on Main, Braamfontein, Newtown, and Alexandra.

Art Week Joburg has been modelled on Art Week Cape Town, and is a “collaborative partnership” between the Contemporary Art Development Trust, the Visual Arts Network South Africa, and Artlogic.

“Highlights of the week abound, including Pat Mautloa’s exhibition at Mashumi Projects in Vilakazi Street, Soweto on 19 August; a walkabout on 20 August by artist Roger Ballen at Circa on Jellicoe; as well as a thought-provoking panel discussion titled Regarding Women at Gallery Momo; and a performance at Goodman Gallery by The Brother Moves On titled The Brother Breaks the Bullion,” said spokesperson Diana Williams.

“On 23 August, Fourthwall Books [will host] a talk on publishing, and Short Change [will open] at the Market Theatre.”

Williams said that the week-long event will seek to create a “more robust” community of art producers, consumers and appreciators by acting as a “market platform, an information hub, and a leisure attraction for locals and visitors”.

“Forty-eight participants, including art galleries, individual artists, independent spaces and curators will host Art Week Joburg,” she said.

“Aside from the main programme, broader precinct activity such as restaurants, shops, neighbourhood markets, and live music are included.”

Art-lovers will be able to make the most of Art Week Joburg with a shuttle service that will ferry people to and around the Rosebank art strip, Maboneng Precinct, Soweto, and Alexandra.

Art Week Joburg will run from 19 until 24 August at various venues around the city.

FNB Joburg Art Fair will run from 22 until 24 August at the Sandton Convention Centre, 161 Maude Street, Sandton.
