Strike affects Midrand business

MIDRAND - Managing director of Ria Sebetsa Security Services Danny Maduray said strikers became violent at 5pm on 3 July as they would not let employees out of their businesses on 16th Road.

Midrand police and the security services are on the scene to contain the strikers.

Meanwhile, Midrand police denied that a police officer in civilian clothing was assaulted by striking Numsa workers on 15th and 16th Road on 2 July.

Constable Matome Tlamela said, “Constable Mangena was pushed by a shop steward who thought he was one of the strikers. There is no assault charge as the officer was not assaulted.”

One of the companies affected by the strike is Pinnacle Africa on 15th Road. Company spokesperson Henry Ferreira said, “Some employees were prepared to work but were forced to leave the workplace by strikers.

While no one was injured or assaulted, there was a certain level of intimidation. Some of our gates were damaged by Numsa strikers when they forced their way into our property on 2 July.”

Ferreira said his company was still open for business, but service levels had been affected due to the absence of most staff.

Danny Maduray of Ria Sebetsa Security Services said the workers became violent with the police but the police had the situation under control.

Maduray said there were many people striking and he believed the strike was legal.

Midrand Reporter journalist Nokuthula Sonile said there were about 150 people striking and while the situation was calm at midday she had heard reports of the violence Maduray spoke of. She is waiting for official comment from Midrand police.

Sonile said the strikers were walking laps on 15th and 16th Streets in Midrand and had stopped outside businesses to protest.

Updates will follow as the strike develops.
