Suspects caught in the act on camera

MIDRAND - Ria Sebetsa Security Services have caught suspects performing a follow-home bank robbery on camera.

2 July, 4.30pm:

Midrand Police said the men were on their wanted suspect list but no arrests have been made as of yet.

Midrand police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela said the police were investigating the case and hoped to bring suspects to book.

Community members commended Ria Sebetsa Security Services on getting the footage and hoped that it would aid the police’s fight against the crimes of follow-home robberies.

1 July, 2.30pm:

The security services and Midrand police are on high alert for such crimes and have issued a warning.

Managing director of the security company, Danny Maduray said that recently there had been many incidents where Midrand community members withdrew large sums of cash from banks and were followed home or to their business places and robbed.

Midrand police communications officer Constable Matome Tlamela confirmed that many such incidents had been reported recently.

The security company’s cameras captured the incident outside a Midrand complex. As the resident drove up to the complex gate, a white Mercedes pulled up behind him and two men got out of the vehicle. One man walked to the passenger side of the vehicle while the other walked to the drivers’ side and pointed a firearm at the driver.

Out of the camera’s view, the men then stole the money and ran back to the Mercedes. The driver of the Mercedes then reversed and they left.

Maduray said the security services and police had noted that in the reported incidents, suspects were often in pairs or groups of three and carried firearms. “They also drive extravagant cars such as Mercedes Benz and Audis. The amounts that have been taken range from R20 000 upwards,” said Maduray.

He said that community members were cautioned against withdrawing large amounts of money. It was suggested they rather transfer the funds electronically or use cellphone banking.

He also said that Ria Sebetsa Security Services would escort community members who wished to withdraw large sums of money.
