Companies step in to help animals

MIDRAND - Twenty-six stray dogs and a cat got sterilised during a one-day community project in Midrand.

Society for the Upliftment of People and Animals Centurion and three Midrand-based companies – Fourways Equine Clinic, Merial South Africa and Paws Resort Kennels and Cattery – hosted a community outreach to spay and neuter animals in Olievenhoutbosch.

Chairperson and project co-ordinator for Society for the Upliftment of People and Animals, Maridza Kruger said, “We sterilised animals because it is the most humane and effective method to control the stray animal population and stops animals from being aggressive.”

She added that the plight of stray animals is heart-rending as these animals are left to fend for themselves and often fall sick.

Kruger concluded that over two years the sterilisations could mean a reduction of 1 664 unwanted animals in the stray population.

She said minor medical assistance was also provided to the animals in the community.

Dr Roy Page from Paws Resort Kennels and Cattery donated the use of their facilities in Midrand where veterinarians performed surgery simultaneously. “We wanted to give back to the community by providing medical care and sterilisation for the animals,” one vet, Dr Barnard said.

Merial South Africa donated the anaesthetic that was used in sterilisations, and Fourways Equine Clinic helped with performing surgeries.
