Rabie Ridge fights EFF land grab

RABIE RIDGE - Residents did not take kindly to a land grab over the weekend when Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters allocated themselves land and tried to build shacks.

The land, stand 1075 and stand 1345, were first brought into the spotlight when South African National Civic Organisation Sol Plaatjie branch and residents protested over title deeds in November 2013.

On 22 June, Rabie Ridge Residents’ Association spokesperson Charles Jones said residents destroyed some of the shacks that were erected. He said what EFF supporters did was unacceptable.

“No one can just put up shacks on the City of Joburg’s land. The city promised that land to people of Rabie Ridge.”

Jones added that the EFF supporters came from Tembisa, Kaalfontein and other areas in Midrand to try and settle on the land in question. He stated that the land already has been set aside for development for housing for the people of Rabie Ridge and no one will come and steal it.

“We have worked hard to get the land and once we get the title deeds we will finally have homes,” said Jones.

Ward 80 councillor Queen Sikweqa said the land has already been bought. “The City has bought the land for development in Rabie Ridge, were are waiting for paperwork. No one can just put a shack on any land.”

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi was not available for comment.

An EFF member of the Rabie Ridge community, David Nhlapo said people build shacks anywhere because they have no place to stay.

“The government of South Africa has let its people down. Twenty years after democracy people still fight for land to build what they call a home,” he said.
